Caleb got sting by a bee a few weeks ago. We were at the pool and he tried to get (what he thought was) a dead bee out of the pool. It wasn't dead and it stung him. We raced home and I gave him his Epi Pen and got dressed from our swimsuits and headed to the hospital. Since were in a pandemic, we had to wear our masks, social distance and was told we needed to wait to be seen.
I didn't want to be 'that mom' but since I'm his no. 1 advocate, I needed to be 'that mom' and tell them we couldn't wait. Caleb was lobster red and starting to bleed from scratching himself so hard because he couldn't stop itching. He had hives ALL over too. All this is "normal" for him which means this is how he usually reacted to bee stings. After he was given steroids and Benadryl, he fell asleep and was monitored. About 2 hours later, we got discharged. We walked back through the ER and were waiting outside for maybe a minute and Caleb said he felt dizzy and the blood drained from his face and lips then he passed out. Thankfully, I caught him as he went down and laid him on the floor. The nurses that were around rushed over and put him in a wheelchair. Then we were back in the ER. He got an IV and has very low blood pressure. After he stabilized and came to, I asked if he could have some juice and food. It was now about 6pm and we hadn't eaten or had anything to drink since 2pm.
The ER doctor told me he could have fainted because of dehydration and empty stomach AND/OR because it's an effect of the bee sting- which would be a new symptom. We finally got home about 8:30pm after a very long afternoon.
I called the allergist to talk to him about what happened and now we will be getting blood work done for Caleb and a new allergy skin test. His allergy could have gotten worse or he may have Mast Cell Disorder. We will see. We may need to start immunotherapy depending on how severe his allergy has progressed.
Either way, I hate that he got stung again and has such a bad reaction. It's scary as a mom to see your child pass out! Hopefully we'll get some answers soon and in the meantime- NO MORE BEE STINGS!
