One of my most favorite times of day is when we eat dinner together and I get to hear about the kids' day. They're very good about telling me all about it. Who they played with, what they played, what they did in class, their least favorite and most favorite things about their day etc.
Tonight, when it was Ethan's turn, our dinner conversation went like this:
Mom- "Ethan, tell me about your day."
Ethan- "Well, of course Izzy had her aide with her today and she stayed with us during our indoor lunch time, which was fun."
Mom- "Why does Izzy have an aide?"
Ethan- "Because Izzy doesn't think like the rest of us and needs help. And she often gets frustrated. Especially when it gets loud, so she has an aide to help her. She also gets frustrated when people stare at her."
Mom- "Who told you that about Izzy? Her aide?"
Ethan- "No, I can just tell. But don't worry Mom, I never stare at her and always tell her she's doing great and other nice things when I see her get frustrated. She's just like me only her brain thinks a little differently and that's okay. She's still my friend."
It was in that moment that I looked at Ethan and truly saw Christ's love in his eyes. He could tell that this girl was a little different and needs help. He, on his own, had taken it upon himself to be kind even when others stare, look, and treat her like she's different. He sees her as just any other person and shows her kindness, friendship and love. I had no idea he knew all this about her and how he had been treating her. I am so incredibly proud of him. I wanted to just cry in that moment.
He is such an insightful, kind hearted boy. He is growing up to me such a good person and I can't believe I am lucky enough to be his mother.
Ethan, I hope your soul always remains this way and you continue to see people for who they are and how we are all the same in God's eyes despite our differences. I am so proud of you and love you so much. Thank you for being such a great example to your family and friends.
